SC Standard/Common Core Standard:
· Identify the materials, techniques, and processes used in a variety of artworks.
· Describe the ways that different materials, techniques, and processes evoke different responses in one who is creating or viewing artworks.
· Discuss similarities and differences in the composition and in the use of the elements and principles of design in two contrasting works of visual art.
· Compare and contrast several artists’ use of the elements and principles of design and describe the ways in which these characteristics express the artists’ ideas.
Academic Vocabulary:
- Line is used to represent space and outlines (can also be used for mass or volume.)
- Line measure-refers to the length and width of a line
- Line type- curved or angular
- Line direction- where the line appears to be going
- Location- the placement of a line (is the line unified or divided)
- Character- the overall representation of line
- Vertical- height, stability, strong
- Horizontal- calm, balance, rest
- Curved- relaxed, graceful, movement
- Diagonal- action
- Jagged- wild, nervous, angry
- Outline- a line that describes the outer edges of shapes and appears flat.
- Implied line- the missing portion of the line is “implied” and continues by it visually completed by the observer as the line appears again
- Contour line- the line/s that define the edges and surfaces of forms (which vary in thickness and darkness).
- Cross-Contour line- the line that crosses and defines the surface to the outermost edges of objects

STUDENT OUTCOME: You will learn….
· Create a series of 5-minute contour line sketches of objects within the classroom
· Create a line drawing using an artist hea
Bellwork: Students will be introduced to the element of line and several artists who strongly use line within their work such as Bridget Riley and Alexander Calder. Students will discuss the use of line throughout these artists’ work.
BEFORE: Energize Learning
Students will discuss the different styles and techniques of line throughout these artists’ works.
DURING: (Teacher) New Information/Introduce content
-Students will watch a demonstration of contour line. Students will gain more understanding through teacher examples.
(Teacher demonstration, discussion, and correction & praise)
DURING: (Student) Applying Knowledge
- Students will draw a series of contour lines based on objects found in the room. This will count as a daily class grade of 5 contour line drawings of 5 different objects within the room. They will be graded on their participation and level of understanding of the activity.
- Students will choose an artist head of their choice to create the final line drawing project of the artist head. This project will be graded by the use of different line techniques and patterns (at least 10-15), the cleanliness of the piece, and the use of the picture plane.
AFTER: Generalize/Summarize
